My Team: Samantha Swol (Motion), Rachel Kuehnel(Grid and Brand Guidelines), Riley Hamady(Environment Design), Megan Bovee(Wayfinding)
My team and I worked on a sponsored project to create a brand system refresh for the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center. We created this system to be welcoming, easy to read and refreshing.

A brief animated overview of our re-brand showcasing the system we created.
Presentation
We presented our re-brand at the end of the project to representatives of the VA hospital and were able to receive feedback on what they responded well to.
Research
For the first 5 weeks of this project we delved deep into research of the VA talked with patients of the VA and employees of the hospital to gain insight on the different perspectives and what is needed for the hospital. Many of the problems that patients, visitors and employees had included lack of wayfinding and signage, confusing process with documents and forms. We wanted our brand to respond to the feedback and show visual solutions on what can be improved on within the hospital.
Logo
Iconography
We chose colors that are classic and represent what the VA is all about, the veterans. We used red, white, blue and gold color scheme that is recognizable to anyone.
This is the iconography I created for easy to read and easy to understand wayfinding. I took inspiration from icons that are commonly used for certain things such as a clock for the waiting room or the heart for cardiology. I made sure that the icons meshed with the brand identity well by making them “blocky” as well as keeping in mind the far away read for visitors and patients.
System Applications
What I Learned
This logo was inspired by the badges that members of the military wear on their uniforms as well as the stripes on the American flag.. We enjoyed how the shapes fit together like a puzzle and that it would make the perfect shape to build a system around
This was an overall great experience and I enjoyed being able to talk with the client and gain different perspectives on the needs of the patients, visitors, as well as the employees. This was my first branding project involving a client. I gained more experience working with a great team of designers.
