Ghost in the machine

Team: Nathan Hanks (Design and Photo Editing ), Megan Bovee (Design and Illustration)

From an episode of This American Life Podcast titled “Ghost in the Machine” we designed this newspaper using the content transcribed from the episode to give a visual and tactile experience with the episode printed. We used inspiration from the content to create the illustrative visuals and glitchy effects on the imagery.

What i Learned

We listened to the episode of This American Life podcast called “Ghost in the Machine” . After we listened we transcribed the entire podcast to be then used as the content of our newspaper.

Based on the content the ghost in machines that were talked about in the episode varied from a dog recognizing its late owner’s voice in a recording to memories of a woman who’s father invented the MRI and how being in one helps her feel closer to him. All had one thing in common, they were about ways technology had a “ghost” left behind.

Since the article was about digital “ghosts”, we wanted to create a visual language that reflected that. By using glitchy effects in the imagery, icons that represented the stories and navigate the reader, illustrations, and graphics inspired by soundwaves, we were able to create a cohesive visual language that reflected the subject of the stories told in the episode.

I learned more about layout of a publication and how to create a visual language with imagery and illustrations.
